Our Beautiful Story

Our church is currently doing a sermon series on Growing Deeper. As part of that series, they are asking folks to share their "Beautiful Stories" of ways that their lives have intersected with God to create a beautiful story. Several beautiful stories have already been shared. You can check them out here:

I want to share a beautiful story, but I'm a little nervous about the whole videotaping myself and putting on the internet kind of thing. So I thought first I would write it and maybe that would give me the confidence to tape it later.

My Beautiful Story

In February 2010 I began to feel God was speaking to me in a way I had not felt before. My husband, Jimmy, and I had been blessed with two beautiful children who were 3 years old at the time. One of our children is adopted from China. We are big advocates of adoption and have been amazed how it has blessed our family.
So when I heard of a family from our church adopting from Ethiopia, I was thrilled. This was a country we had strongly considered when we adopted from China so I couldn't wait to live vicariously through this family and follow their journey.
Then one morning during some quiet time, I felt as if God was saying, "Yes, you too". At first, I was thinking/answering, "No, not us". We were very happy with our family of four. We had no intention of expanding our family. But day after day I continued to hear, "Yes, you too".
(Now I will pause here to say no I did not 'hear' God in an audible voice. Which in many ways made it easier to ignore as just my own head and not something that God was calling our family to do. But the thought continued and I felt as if it was not coming from me. I say this only because I have struggled with knowing how we 'hear' God in case others also wrestle with the same thought. I have found that creating time for prayer and quiet allows me to hear him.)
I started to talk to Jimmy about it and we began to pray about it. We spent a lot of time talking about it , and (not surprisingly to those who know me well) I even made a pro/con list of adding to our family with a child from Ethiopia.
God continue to say, "Yes you too". He did not seem to care that I had more cons on the list then pros.
In March 2010, Jimmy and I took a trip, just the two of us. We decided on that trip that we would move forward with adopting from Ethiopia. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the beginning of our new journey. We completed all of our paperwork with our dossier sent to Ethiopia in May 2010. We began our wait for a referral.
Around January of 2011, I began feeling that I was hearing God again. This time to adopt a Waiting Child. (Children are placed on the waiting child list because of their age or medical history.) We had adopted through the waiting child program in China, but had decided not to this time.
I began to stalk our agencies waiting child page. Checking it everyday for any new children that might be pulling on my heart. I mentioned to Jimmy my thoughts on possibly adopting a waiting child, but he (nor anyone else) knew how much this was weighing on my heart.
Then one night in March 2011, while Jimmy was out for the evening, I got on the computer and saw her face for the first time. I cried and prayed over that face that night. The next morning, Jimmy stopped in by my office (not a usual occurrence) to bring a surprise coffee. I said, "I have someone to show you". A few hours later he texted , yes-go ahead and ask for more information. Oh the joy I felt!
A few days later, we accepted the referral of our beautiful daughter. What we know of the beautiful story of her first days and weeks of life, will one day be her own to tell.
The journey to her has changed us. God has so blessed us through this beautiful child. He is making us new. And we are trying to live our lives to listen for His voice and follow His way. We are thankful that we are All adopted by Him and that we are All children of God.
And that, is my beautiful story.

Life is Good!

Tomorrow will mark 3 weeks since we have arrived home with Gabre Meti. It is almost hard for me to believe how quickly she has adapted and how much we are enjoying our time with her. She is a delightful child that continues to show her happy personality everyday. Over the last three weeks she has gotten two teeth (or one and 1/2), began waving at people and started to crawl. She is an incredibly happy baby that delights in playing alone, with us and with her brother and sister. Sarah Bess and Davis have adapted so well- there are moments, but overall we are all doing great. Gabre and I celebrated our birthdays yesterday- I am now 34 and Gabre is the ripe old age of 10 months.

Sarah Bess and Davis attend a year round school and are out this week and next week, so this week we have had the blessing of spending the week at the beach with Sudie, Papa Rob and Uncle Sam. It has been blissful. We have had beautiful weather. Sarah Bess and Davis have had more fun on the beach than I have ever seen. They don't even want to leave when we say it is time to go around 4 o'clock! (Of course, having Uncle Sam to play in the ocean and make cool sand animals has to be the dream of all five year olds). Gabre loves the beach. She has eaten a good amount of sand. She loves sitting where the waves can wash up on her. And she even took a brief nap there one afternoon.

Praising God for the blessings in our life and this precious time together!

We have lots of helpers at bath time!
Bottles are delicious on the beach and yes, I am still sleeping with my bottle!
                                                                  I Love the Beach!!!
Making a thunder bird with Uncle Sam (why a thunder bird you ask... I have no idea)

The In-Between

We are home. We are so thankful to be home.
Gabre Meti is doing better than we expected. She wants to party at 3 AM as she adjusts to the time frame and she has a horrific cold with double ear infections...and yet her smile still shines through.

Sarah Bess and Davis are also both doing very well...they are tired, they are adjusting...but their smiles also continue to light our day.

As anyone that has ever brought a child home knows, when a new family member enters chaos presents itself in some form. It doesn't matter how old the child is, if the child is biological or adopted, the first child or the tenth, what was previously the family unit, schedule and way of life has to change. The old 'normal' is gone and a new 'normal' must find its place.

So we are in the in-between. Our old normal is gone, our new normal not yet arrived. In these moments of in-between we are seeing so many blessings bestowed upon us.

We are blessed with wonderful friends and family, we are blessed with two incredible five year old children that are being terrific siblings, we are blessed with our church community to help in these initial days, and we are blessed with our newest angel. We are tired, there have been some tears, some moments are a struggle...but these blessings help our smiles shine through as we enjoy the in-between.

Reflecting on our Last Day Here

As we prepare to head out of Ethiopia in about 7 hours...I have been reflecting on our time here. (when I can stop staring at our sleeping daughter).
While I am not a fan of the two trip rule and the emotional roller coaster of the past three months between our trips, coming here twice has allowed me to grow in my view of this place not too far from where my daughter was born.
On our first trip, I was... Overwhelmed. Heartbroken. Devastated. Both by the poverty and the orphans we came to love at the Care Center. Little else could get in.
This time, while these emotions still exist, I have also been able to see why people love this place, these people. I am very grateful for that. That I have that memory to share with Gabre before she is old enough for us to return here together as a family for her to also get to know this place. To share with her the love shown between people in this country where she was born.
We have had some amazing experiences this trip...the most memorable our visit to an Ethiopian Envangelic Church service on Sunday Morning. Wow-they know how to praise God. Wish I had it on videotape to share with our group that we are starting a new church with.
We also got to visit Entoto Mountain, the church there and the palace. We had a cultural dinner last night and as always in our adoption journeys are blessed with meeting the most wonderful people that we know will become lifelong friends.
While I could not be more ready to be home and with Sarah Bess and Davis, I will miss our new friends, the amazing coffee (in particular the Macchiato!), the way the hotel staff love on our baby, the constant reminders of the blessings that have been given to Jimmy and I, and yes...even the driving (except for the road where they are building the bridge on the way to the care center!).
Good Bye Ethiopia. Thank you for our daughter.

A Few of our Favorite Things

My mom said I cursed us by saying how much easier it was going to be able to communicate with everyone this time versus China...then no internet here for four days! My poor parents were a nervous wreck- we should have had a back up plan. It is so great to be able to hear from everyone again and get your love, support and prayers!

Overall, things have been going very well here. Gabre is a sweet girl and has been a joy to have with us. She is not the best sleeper at night (yes, God once again laughs at our expectation of a perfect little baby!). Her main problem is the bottle...she has never known taking a bottle other than the bottle proping they do here at the care center. She is used to having a bottle in her crib with her at all times. The first couple of nights, Jimmy and I being the dedicated parents that we are, decided we needed to break that bad habit right away. Two problems with this- 1.) the poor girl's world has just been rocked- can't she have her bottle at night? 2.) the first couple of days she wouldn't drink a bottle from us. She would just play with it, until we gave it to her in her crib. So we quickly wised up, that this will be an issue to better be addressed when we get home. She didn't do well the first night with the bottle, but did much better last night.

She is now taking a bottle from me well which is great! She still wants one in the crib, but that will be for a later time.

I wanted to share in this post some of our favorite things we have learned about our sweet girl in these first few days:

- She loves to dance. She is not picky about genre, but often when she hears music she will sway back and forth and smile. (we learned that when not many adoptive parents are at the orphanage, the nannies often put on music and dance with the babies...sweet)

- She has a GREAT grin. She uses it often, but not freely. The best is when she is doing something and you call her name and she looks at you and grins- as if to say she is happy to see you.

- She has an even BETTER giggle. This she does not use often. But when she does, it makes you giggle back.

- She loves the ergo carrier. We have both logged a lot of great hours of snuggling in that thing.

We are overwhelmed with the blessing of this child.

We miss Sarah Bess and Davis so very much. We are now ready to get Gabre home and start our journey as a family of five.

We've Cleared...and We are on our way!!!

Ok- I realize how slack I have been in posting when I came on to make a post that we are on our way and realized that I never posted that we cleared!!

So- woo hoo, we have cleared : o ). We cleared on Monday August 22. The Embassy didn't have appointments until Tuesday, Sept. 6th and we were able to get an appointment that day.

As I type, we are in a DC hotel room about to head to the airport for our flight to Addis. In less than 24 hours we will have our sweet girl in our arms. This has been a long road, but we are so excited that her time to be home with her forever family is near.

It was harder to leave Sarah Bess and Davis than I anticipated- harder than when we did the same thing 3 months ago. I think we all knew that when we return our family will be forever changed. We look forward to moving forward as our family of five.

This trip is bringing lots of time to reflect over our China trip 3 years ago... all the ways we can communicate back home- the blog (we hope!), facebook and skype to talk with Sarah Bess and Davis are such blessings to feel all the love of our friends and family.

Your emails, texts and phone calls over the past week wishing us good luck and sending your love and prayers have blessed us in more ways than we can express. THANK YOU!!!

Last trip- we were able to post on the blog only once, but we will try again this time and also be posting on facebook as we can.
